Acne Treatments With Benzoyl Peroxide Could Be Dangerous

The treatment of acne is certainly not a new one, and the FDA has had the chance to thoroughly review each of the active ingredients in most acne creams. few people know this, but back in 1995, the FDA changed its category for Benzoyl Peroxide from Category I (safe) to Category III (safety unknown). What the FDA found would alarm most acne cream consumers. the active ingredients used in the majority of acne creams has proven to cause significant concerns for consumers; some as severe as cancerous tumors. the chemical based Benzoyl Peroxide is one of the most popular active ingredients used in the treatment of acne, yet very few consumers are even aware of these decade old findings by the FDA. the author examines the FDA findings, and what consumers need to know to effectively treat their acne without long term health concerns.

Studies have shown that Benzoyl Peroxide generates free radicals in the skin. That’s right the same free radicals we are taught to defend against on a daily basis are actually being applied to the skin twice daily. these free radicals can cause a number of concerns for consumers all by themselves with the likelihood of premature aging and severe wrinkling. the healing process is significantly slowed by these free radicals and the overall health of the skin and body are of concern.

The FDA conducted a series of studies on this chemical based ingredient and ultimately modified its findings until further testing. In a study dated February 17, 1995 the FDA changed the ranking category of Benzoyl Peroxide to a category 3 (an ingredient of concern) from a previous ranking of a category 1. it seems that the FDA found that Benzoyl Peroxide that was applied to the skin of test mice resulted in the formation of tumors within the skin. Apparently, the long term use of this ingredient actually proves to initiate the development of tumors in the skin. as a result, the FDA launched new studies, ones that will take years to complete, to determine the potential damages that its use can cause.

Despite this finding by the FDA and the published studies of many institutions consumers continue the use of this product with little to no knowledge of the risks that they take each and every day. many consumers have been using this product for years and years without the knowledge that each application is as damaging to the skin as laying in direct sunlight for hours unprotected. the accumulation of ingredient is almost assured to cause long term damage to the skin, and yet very few consumers are unaware.

There are many alternatives to this harsh ingredient, ones that are not damaging long term to the skin. In fact, in a recent study by Oxford University, the popular anti inflammatory Resveratrol was named the number one active ingredient in the treatment of acne. You many have heard of this ingredient due to its healing powers as displayed in a study about heart health that was released a few years back. Resveratrol was said to help the health of the heart and that people who drank one glass of wine a day were said to have improved heart health. well it seems that Resveratrol has many more uses than just that as its anti aging as well as acne treatment is well documents. Experts advise that consumers using Benzoyl Peroxide cease at once and begin the use of a acne cream that uses natural ingredients including Resveratrol. the all natural alternatives have proven far more effective in clinical studies and they have absolutely no long term health concerns; an important factor when making your acne cream decision.
