30 Ways to Prevent Heart Attacks

1. Biking

The benefits of regular exercise have been unanimous in promoting physical health. Studies have shown that regular workouts have reduced the risks of heart attacks and other cardiovascular ailments.

2. Dark Chocolate

Flavonoids contained in dark chocolate are anti-inflammatory agents, which also maintain arterial flexibility, apart from reducing cholesterol levels in the blood. Dark chocolates also boost serotonin levels in the blood and render proper recovery from physical shocks.

3. Beer

Light-beer contains heart-healthy antioxidants, which reduce bad cholesterol levels in the blood. Having a beer everyday may have some benefit to immunity. However, one should exercise moderation while consuming beer, as over-consumption can cause more harm than good.

4. Vitamin B Complex

Regular intake of Vitamin B complex supplements tends to lower the levels of homocysteine, a compound that elevates risks of heart diseases. The blood vessels are also suitably enlarged to allow improved circulation of blood.

5. Sleep Apnea

Commonly termed as snoring, sleep apnea has been a potent reason for heart diseases in men. Snoring accounts for sporadic or constricted breathing during sleep, causing interrupted rest. This upsets the repairing cycle, thus increasing chances of cardiac arrests in the long run.

6. Sleep

People sleeping less than 7 hours are at higher risks for contracting heart diseases than people with optimum amounts of rest at night. Uninterrupted sleep is absolutely essential for maintaining blood pressure and cholesterol levels.

7. Fish

Fishes are replete in Omega-3 fatty acids, which aid in arterial cell renewal and maintain proper cholesterol levels in blood. Apart from that, it also reduces arterial fibrillations. Consuming salt-water fishes like halibut, cod and salmon, twice a week, will aid in excellent cardiovascular health.

8. High-Fibre Breakfast

With low glycemic levels in the mornings, a high-fibre breakfast is the best way to kick-start the metabolic rate. Studies have shown that men consuming multi-grained breakfast have had 23% less chances of developing heart ailments than those who do not.

9. Flaxseed

Flaxseeds are miracle pills for optimum cardiovascular health. Replete in good quantities of fibre and essential fats, these seeds can be eaten whole, ground or in the form of cooking oil.

10. Garlic

The pungent-tasting clove is an excellent agent in reducing cholesterol. It boosts hormonal activity and purges the blood of impurities. Consuming one or two cloves daily will result in optimum health of your heart.

11. Tea

Be it black or green, tea has been unanimously effective in contributing to cardiovascular health. The rich antioxidant content is said to regulate fluid control and arterial cleansing, and also facilitate low cholesterol levels. People consuming two cups of tea every day have only 11% chance of suffering a stroke in their lifetime.

12. Hazelnut

Consuming 425 grams of hazelnut daily will reduce the risk of coronary blockage by 16%. Its essential oil content is beneficial to the delicate cellular lining of the heart and blood vessels. Whether eaten whole, ground, or roasted, hazelnuts are excellent additions to the daily diet.

13. Legumes

A healthy inclusion of legumes is essential for efficient cardiovascular functions. Rich in fibre and mineral content, legumes provide the right amount of nutrients needed to ensure the proper functioning of the heart.

14. Sex

A good sex life is paramount in maintaining optimum physical functions and this holds true for heart-health, as well. Sex promotes hormonal production, neural stability and vascular strength, among its many benefits. Studies have shown that men having sex twice a week have lesser chances of contracting strokes in their 50’s than those who do not.

15. Ecosprin

The anti-inflammatory power of Ecosprin tends to reduce blood pressure and emotional anxiety. However, it should only be taken according to the doctor’s prescription.

16. Cherries

The sweet little nubs are miraculous in reducing risks of heart disease. Studies conducted show that the anthocyanine pigment, responsible for lending colour to cherries, is also a key ingredient aiding uric acid reduction. An excess of uric acid in blood will eventually lead to cardiac arrest. Consuming a handful of cherries, whether whole, dried or juiced, will ensure a healthy heart for a long time.

17. Beans

Beans contain good quantities of folic acid and are downright essential for maintaining the fluidity of blood, without which it is impossible to ensure cardiovascular wellness. Consuming a cup of beans every day will provide you with all the essential nutrients you need to keep your heart healthy.

18. Oranges

Oranges, one of the richest sources of Vitamin C, lower cholesterol levels and clear arterial blockages. Oranges are versatile fruits, which can be consumed whole or made into juices. Eat an orange every day to reap benefits of good health.

19. Skip Aerated Beverages

Aerated drinks only provide a host of empty calories to the body, while upping sugar levels in the blood. These commercial drinks are responsible for obesity and heart ailments. Opting for water or fruit juices instead, will minimize risks of heart damage.

20. Water

Proper hydration maintains blood fluidity and reduces chances of internal coagulation. Drinking 2.5 litres of water daily will flush the toxins from the system and optimize cholesterol levels.

21. Ginger

Inflammation is one of the many causes of cardiac arrest. Thus, including anti-inflammatory supplements is paramount in keeping vascular infections at bay.

22. Bladder Control

Recent studies have displayed that men exercising great bladder control are more prone to cardiac arrests than men who relieve themselves at the slightest urge. An overloaded bladder induces faster palpitations and causes the arteries to contract, thereby resulting in fatal strokes. Timely urination, thus, will not only preserve the heart, but will also reduce chances of prostrate troubles in the future.

23. Regular Vacations

All work and no play not only make Jack dull, but also make him prone to cardiac arrests. Studies have shown that people taking regular vacations from their strenuous work-life have lesser chances of heart ailments, than people working continuously for months, at a stretch.

24. Heart Rate Variability

HRV is the heart’s ability to respond to various activities and situations. Hotter climates and overexposure to pollution has been one of the prime factors in its rampant increase. Living in artificially cooled and germ-free environments helps reduce the chances of overworking the heart.

25. Multivitamin Supplements

Due to a compelling work-life, it is not always possible to maintain a healthy diet. Taking dietary supplements thus, makes up for all impending nutrient losses. Ask your doctor to prescribe multivitamins for you to take on a daily basis. This will strengthen your immunity, maintain proper vascular viability and keep your overall health in good shape.

26. Stress Management

Stress is the ultimate deterrent to achieving proper heart health. Stress creates a hormonal influx, elevates the heart rate and in doing so, causes the heart to pump at a rate beyond its capacity. Not only does this weaken the heart in the long run, but also makes one susceptible to cardiac arrests. Doing away with stress will increase your resistance to heart ailments.

27. No Smoking

One cannot emphasise on the disadvantages of smoking enough. Studies show that regular smokers have 25% more chances of suffering a stroke by their 50’s than non-smokers. Thus, by quitting, one can lead a healthy life.

28. Diabetes Check

Diabetic patients, due to their high insulin resistance, run the risks of quickly developing heart ailments. Keeping a regular check on blood sugar-levels will be an excellent way to keep the circulatory system in a healthy condition. With proper diet and medication, the effects of diabetes can be kept in check.

29. Depression

Depression is one of the prime psychological reasons behind increased susceptibility of strokes. The depressed have shown marked reduction in oxytocin and serotonin production, which in the long run have resulted in poor circulatory health. With proper counselling and psychiatric aid, one can escape the risks of fatal strokes.

30. Regular Cholesterol Check-ups

Annual cholesterol-level checkups are essential to monitor any semblance of cardiac damage. This will help in diagnosing the correct dosage, diet and exercise required, to bring the body back to health.

By following the above-mentioned steps, you will never run the risk of heart attacks.

Reduce Your Risk Seven Simple Ways to Prevent Prostate Cancer

Prostate cancer is a subject most men would rather not think about. everything about it — from early diagnosis by a digital rectal exam to potential side-effects of incontinence and erectile dysfunction — makes men want to crack open a beer and change the channel.

A big factor in this avoidance behavior is that 1) We fall for the notion that genetics play a big role in whether we get the disease or not; and 2) Since there’s nothing we can do to change our genes, we think we might as well do what we like and hope for the best.

What we need to know before we get swept into the vortex of mainstream medical options — from early diagnosis to eventual surgery, radiation, or hormonal treatments — is that our lack of knowledge about how to easily reduce our risk factors is causing us to avoid taking preventive measures.

Read that last paragraph again if you need to. What it says is, Your lack of clear understanding of how to reduce your risk is making you more likely to get the disease you fear.

Knowledge is Power

As a man in my 60’s, I can say that, indeed, we men like to feel we are in control of our situation. this is no doubt a big factor why we dislike having to turn our fate over to a doctor who may lead us down a path with undesirable consequences.

To put it bluntly, we don’t want to relinquish control to a doctor who may leave us wearing adult diapers or impotent for the rest of our life.

Well, from my reading of the medical literature, I have learned some good news that all men should be aware of: We can greatly lower our risk of developing prostate cancer by adopting a healthy lifestyle, something we should be doing anyway.

Before I go into what these risk factors are, let’s throw out one misconception that may have been keeping you from taking truly preventive measures:

Your genes are not the deciding factor over whether you develop cancer — It is the expression of those genes that you need to focus on. and you can largely control whether these bad genes get expressed or switched ON by how you eat, by minimizing toxic exposures, by getting enough sun, and by staying fit and at your ideal weight.

Now here comes the part you may have a problem with:

If you want to be one of the group of men who are least likely to contract prostate cancer, you will need to become a vegetarian. this is according to the Website Medline plus, published by the National Institutes of Health. very mainstream, although they didn’t put it quite that way.

There are a couple of other facts I must add to make this article as accurate as possible: #1) These risk factors are controllable ones — obviously, we can’t control our genetic heritage, our race, and our age; and #2) We will focus on the aggressive forms of prostate cancer, which are far more likely to be fatal, rather than the slow-growing forms which may go unnoticed and are seldom the cause of death.

So, here is a summarized list of Seven Controllable Risk Factors for Aggressive Prostate Cancer:

* Meat (especially red meat) consumption is a major risk factor (Especially implicated are the heterocyclic amines, which are produced by flame-broiling meats. Darn there goes the manly pastime of barbequeing, too)

* Smoking is a risk factor.

* being a painter, being a non-organic farmer, manufacturing tires, and exposure to Agent Orange — all are risk factors related to chronic toxic exposures.

* Living in a city north of the 40 degrees latitude in the U.S., which is believed to be the result of less sun exposure during winter months, and therefore lower vitamin D levels. this is especially a problem for dark-skinned people.

* Living a sedentary life.

* being obese

* High calcium intake, especially from dairy products.

(Some dietary items that have shown promise is helping reduce your risk of prostate cancer are Green Tea, Tomato/Tomato Products, Broccoli-family vegetables, as well as supplements of Vitamin E, D, and the mineral Selenium.)

We are faced with some hard choices, guys

Is cutting your risk for prostate cancer to almost nothing* worth giving up some of the dietary pleasures we associate with being manly? I would say, you bet I figure it’s better to reduce excess testosterone by giving up eating steak than to have those hormonal levels reduced by surgery, radiation, or chemical means — and deal with some really unmanly side-effects for the rest of my life.

Moving to a warmer latitude, changing occupations, giving up ice cream, becoming more physically active and losing weight can be difficult, but probably aren’t as challenging to our masculine identity as going vegetarian.

The additional benefits of not having to worry so much about heart attacks, stroke, obesity/overweight, and dementia, though, make the decision a no-brainer in my reckoning.

The biggest hurdle for us to overcome is the mental block that by giving up eating meat, we will automatically become less strong and less virile. this is totally absurd. Just look at our closest animal relatives the chimps, bonobos, and gorillas — who eat mainly leaves and fruit — to see if they are weak and impotent.

In the final analysis, the decision is up to you whether you want to reduce your risks for prostate cancer as low as possible. I am not a doctor, so I can’t tell you what you should do. These are merely the result of a broad study of the scientific evidence and the conclusions I arrived at for my own health.

* (Almost nothing is the one case of advanced prostate cancer found out of 100,000 Chinese men by T. Colin Campbell, PhD, in doing his 20 year research on cancer rates in rural and urban China for The China Study. In the U.S., one in every ten men are diagnosed with this disease. China has had a mostly vegetarian diet until recently.)

How Can Sinus Problems Cause Ringing Ears?

Sinusitis is a swelling of the inner lining of the sinuses due to allergies, dust, and exposure to viruses, bacteria, and fungi. the sinus is located between the spaces in the bones of your face. it is the area where mucous drains into the nose. many people often wonder why they experience tinnitus when their sinus problems flare up. Surprisingly, there’s a link between sinus and ringing ears.

If a person is suffering from sinusitis he’ll probably feel discomfort from the pressure. this can make a person feel nauseous, dizzy, and create a headache. once the sinusitis worsens, it will end up totally blocking the airways and will eventually cause sinus-induced ringing ears.

The sinus cavity (which is positioned between both ears) functions as a dirt catcher to prevent foreign objects from entering the lungs. if it gets irritated because of the dirt that it catches, it will result in swelling and exert the pressure to the ear drums. this pressure can make the ear drum react through ear ringing.

But why does pressure start to build? the pressure is created because of the pressing of the swollen sinus cavity. Pressure can also increase as you start to blow your nose to get rid of the mucous. That very act will heighten the pressure further and can even lead to pain in your ears.

That’s not the only reason why sinuses cause ringing ears. when a person is suffering from sinusitis, his nasal pathway is blocked. when the nasal pathway is blocked the ear canal also gets blocked and causes the disruption of the flow of sound into the ears. this makes the ear concentrate on the internal noise, which creates a ringing sound. Sometimes you may even hear the blood flowing with your heart beat.

Sinus ear ringing is a very painful and tedious condition – in addition to having difficulty breathing, you also need to deal with the ringing in your ears. so what can you do if you have both sinus problems and tinnitus?

Since it is the sinusitis that causes the ear ringing, the ringing will stop if the pressure is lowered. this can be achieved by using nasal sprays, decongestants and antihistamines. These sprays will reduce the inflammation of the sinus but you need to make sure you choose the right antihistamine. some antihistamines aggravate tinnitus so while you may have decreased the pressure, the ringing may actually get worse.

So here’s the most important message if you frequently suffer from sinus problems and tinnitus: be aware that decongestants and antihistamines can get rid of the pressure, but there’s a chance that these medications might actually make your ear ringing worse. to completely solve the problem and alleviate your suffering, surgery may be needed. it may be the most effective solution to completely get rid of both problems.

Alzheimer’s Hope to Be Had With Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy or HBOT is a painless procedure in which patients are exposed to increased pressure, allowing greater absorption of oxygen throughout body tissues that will result in many healing and therapeutic effectuation floods oxygen in areas in our body where it is oxygen starved thereby stimulating regeneration and cell growth.

HBOT is a US FDA approved treatment for 13 indications and is now widely used in the USA, UK and China. It is used for the treatment of such neurological disorders like Cerebral Palsy, Autism, Stroke, Alzheimer’s disease, ADD/ADHD, immune dysfunction, spinal cord injury, anoxic brain injury, near drowning and other off-label indications.

HBOT started out as a medical treatment to speed up and enhance the body’s natural ability to heal. Today it is now an approved modality that is most often used as an enhancement therapy for wide variety of medical conditions. It is a non-invasive method. It uses 100% oxygen under increased atmospheric pressure in a controlled hyperbaric chamber.

Alzheimer’s, the most common form of dementia is diagnosed in people over 65 years of age. It is thought to be incurable, degenerative and a terminal disease. there is an estimated 26.6 million people worldwide that have Alzheimer’s in the year 2006 and the number could quadruple by 2050.

And like you I don’t want that number to quadruple in 2050. And HBOT maybe the answer to make those numbers dwindle. So please do help me spread the news about HBOT, help me spread the hope that this modern therapy may bring.

Single and double bag hyperbaric chambers that measure 34 inches in diameter and 105 inches long are already available. These hypebaric chambers feature a proven strap and steel reinforcements system. their high strength zippers and straps do take some 60 seconds or more to apply but there are Demo video in websites that make instructions more easier to understand.

These hyperbaric chambers also can fit both child and adult at the same time and their extra long zippers make entry and exit easy for those who have disabilities or injuries. Single bag chamber can be operated solo by anyone while the double bag chamber would need two hands to operate solo especially for people who are disabled or injured.

Hyperbaric chambers can be rented or bought. Rent for a month for single bag chambers cost at $2,000 and $2,675 for double bag chambers. The single bag chamber are sold at $12,000 and $16,900 for double bag chamber.

If you know someone close who is suffering from Alzheimer’s try talking to them about HBOT. It may be able to cure their pains. It will also give them hope in life. Start talking about HBOT. Start helping lives.

Over The Counter Cystic Acne Cures – Why None Of Them Will Ever Work

If you’re searching for any over the counter cystic acne cures, do yourself a huge favor and just stop Every single cure you can buy from the local pharmacy is complete junk and will never be able to help you with your acne problems.

I assume you think my next piece of advice will be to seek out a dermatologist, right? I mean, that’s what everyone else all over the web says in their incredibly insightful articles. If you have severe acne, you should seek out a skilled medical professional.

Imagine me rolling me eyes now, please.

If dermatologists were so skilled when it comes to acne, why are so many patients still suffering from severe acne? Better yet, why do they still prescribe accutane, a dangerous drug with some pretty clear health implications?

Really, when it comes down to it, to many people in the acne industry are just here for the money. That’s why we hear the same old party lines over and over again: wash your skin twice a day, there’s no connection between diet and acne, live with less stress.

It’s enough to make you pull out your hair

Especially when people have documented quite well that there are simple ways to actually clear your acne. What’s more, there have been well documented case studies that literally prove some connection between diet and acne Some dermatologists have slowly learned about these studies and have successfully treated their patients through dietary means, but the majority still act like it’s black magic.

And the drug companies? They’re really in it only for the money. Proactiv is a billion dollar a year company; do you think they want to give up their paychecks? Heck no, which is why they’ll keep on promoting their crappy product that sits on your skin and does nothing to deal with the real acne causing problems inside your body. How can it It just sits there on your skin

This is the problem with all of the over the counter cystic acne cures and for any cures that go on your skin for that matter; they can’t possibly get to the route problems inside your body. A second ago I mentioned the connection between diet and acne has clearly been proven. The connection between the two is the amount of insulin in our blood stream.

You see when we eat a typical meal, some foods are converted to sugar so the body can use it to burn energy. Insulin is released in response to make sure the sugar get’s to where it needs to go. However our diets are so full of junk that our blood streams are flooded with sugar. The body releases a huge torrent of insulin to deal with the massive amount of sugar.

If this only happened once or twice, this wouldn’t be so bad. But this happens to us on a daily basis for years, which eventually causes huge swings from high to low blood sugar and corresponding amounts of insulin. this tires out our immune system, which allows the acne causing bacteria, which exists naturally on every single person in the world, to multiply out of control.

Furthermore, too much insulin in our blood streams causes our skin cells to produce to much oil as well as die faster than normal, both of which get clogged in pores and allow bacteria to feed and multiply, leading to pimples. Preventing this problem by putting something on your skin is akin to insanity If you try to take care of the external problems through gels or creams, they’ll just keep on coming back forever.

Manipulating Gut Bacteria Could Lead to Weight Loss

What is in your gut may determine how much you weigh on the scale. the human gut contains a lot of organisms that help break down food. recent research has suggested that manipulating the composition of the organisms in the gut can help people live a healthy life.

Now, a new research from University of Chicago has found that people can lose weight by manipulating the composition of organisms in the gut. According to researchers, in the future we may have vaccines and medications tailored to grow some types of beneficial bacteria in the gut that help people lose weight.

“Diet-induced obesity depends not just on calories ingested but also on the host’s microbiome,” said the study’s senior author Yang-Xin Fu, MD, PhD, professor of pathology at the University of Chicago Medicine.

Fu added that “host digestion is not completely efficient, but changes in the gut flora can raise or lower digestive efficiency.”

In the study, researchers used animal models to examine the relationship between gut bacteria and immune response of the body.

For the study, researchers used two sets of mice. One set of mice had a tweaked gene and lacked the ability to produce lymphotoxin- a toxin that helps the mice’s immune system regulate the bacteria in the guts while the other set of mice acted as a control. both sets of mice were fed on the same high-calorie diet.

Researchers found that both sets of mice gained during the initial weeks of the study, however, mice that lacked lymphotoxin stopped gaining weight after a couple of weeks whereas normal mice kept getting fatter.

In a second part of the experiment, researchers transferred some of the study mice’s droppings to a set of mice that were raised in a germ-free environment (these mice had no bacteria in their gut). Mice that received droppings on study group mice that had lymphotoxin gained weight but mice that were given droppings from lymphotoxin-lacking mice didn’t gain any weight.

When mice were housed together they ate some of the other mice’s droppings( because mice are coprophagic meaning that they eat excreta of other mice) and gained the ability to get bacteria that are responsible for weight gain.

“Our results suggest that it may be possible to learn how to regulate these microbes in ways that could help prevent diseases associated with obesity. we now think we could inhibit the negative side effects of obesity by regulating the microbiota and perhaps manipulating the immune response,” said Vaibhav Upadhyay, first author of the study.

According to the authors, there are more than 500 different types of strains of bacteria in the gut and “the precise microbes that promote such weight gain and the specific host responses that foster their growth need to be better established.”

The study was published in Nature Immunology.

Slim Fast Diet Plan: What Is It?

Slim Fast is both a brand and a claim of the makers. Originally made by the Thompson Medical Company, in 2000 it was acquired by Unilever who are now the current owners. The principle behind the program is simple. you have one regular meal a day and all the other meals are replaced by their products. It’s been around for years and a lot of people swear by it. Generally, it’s pretty good providing you like (most of the time) drinking your meals. you can imagine you’re an astronaut if it will make you feel any better.

The Slim Fast plan does have a few restrictions though. you must not be pregnant, as much as possible be over 18, plan to lose a maximum of 30 pounds, not nursing and don’t have any major health problems. other than that, you’re good to go. Naturally, it is strongly advised that you first consult your doctor before going on any weight reduction program.

So what’s the plan? on a typical day, a lot of people don’t really eat much at breakfast so it’s not a biggie to have one of their shakes and an apple or any fruit. For lunch, a sandwich or a huge 200 grams of whatever you want and a shake. As a mid afternoon snack, you can have something light like gelatin. For dinner it is (surprise, surprise) a shake, some protein dish like fish, lean meat or skinless chicken or turkey and a salad.

So what really happens is that two of your main meals are replaced by their product. Again if you don’t mind drinking say, your breakfast and dinner, then this diet is for you. although Slim Fast has come up with chewable bars, their main products are in the form of powders, smoothies and shakes. For the people that don’t like cooking and don’t mind replacing a solid meal with something liquid or using a straw instead of a spoon and fork, then I guess this is okay.

So, am I proponent of this program? probably not. although it has been round for quite some time, and a lot of people do swear by it and its’ effects, there are a lot of other simpler, non restrictive and not to mention cheaper ways of losing weight like plain old watching what you eat and exercise. Incidentally, the Slim Fast program or plan does still advise that you do exercise.

One major drawback of the Slim Fast plan is availability of their product. It is not readily available worldwide. Even in the US, not all stores carry the line. I read a comment from a lady in nearby Mexico who could not find a store that sells it. some of my friends who live in Asia for example have trouble. And the price is double what you would pay for here. if you were shipped overseas on an extended tour for example, what do you do then? Anything more than a case or two of the stuff will be classified as commercial quantity and the duties will be out of this world. so is Slim Fast a diet or just a very clever marketing program? you decide.

The Basics of Pregnancy, Exercise and Diet

Pregnancy, exercise, diet – when the first one occurs, then the other two should follow as well. the key in ensuring a good and smooth-sailing pregnancy lies in the inclusion of a healthy diet and exercise routine in a pregnant woman’s lifestyle. out of the myriad of diet plans and exercise programs out there, a pregnant woman must be able to choose something that is specifically tailored for her needs and the pregnancy conditions she has. there are, of course, plenty of reference materials online as well as resource persons in the form of able and knowledgeable doctors who can assist her with this objective. the basic step is to first understand the concepts of pregnancy, exercise and diet individually, before she can determine and discover their interrelations with each other. A pregnant woman can do her own research first by looking up information on the web, reading books related to the subjects of pregnancy, exercise and diet, and talking to other women who have gone through pregnancy in the past. afterwards, she can put together a list of points she wants to go through and clarify with her doctor, in order for the two of them to be able to map out the best exercise and diet program for her.

Although most, if not all pregnant women are already aware of this, it would still be helpful to go over the basics of the concept of pregnancy, to serve as a refresher. Pregnancy is when a woman carries a fetus in her uterus, brought about by the fertilization of an egg by a sperm. the fetus normally develops in the woman’s womb for about nine months or forty weeks, until the time that the baby is finally delivered and born into the outside world. the whole period of pregnancy is made up of three phases, or trimesters. the first trimester is often said to be the riskiest phase, as this is the time when the baby starts to develop, and when a miscarriage is likely to occur. the second semester marks the monitoring phase of the pregnancy. During this time, pregnant women can already start feeling the baby moving around in their wombs, and can have the vital organs examined through ultrasounds to see if they are functioning well. Finally, the third trimester is when the baby’s organs and functions start to fully develop, and the baby is primed for life outside of the mother’s womb.

Given that pregnancy has three unique stages, a healthy and proper diet must then be observed by the pregnant mother, and should be varied to correspond to the needs in each trimester. Having a healthy and well-balanced diet would be a major factor in ensuring the healthy condition of the baby at birth. Generally, a pregnant woman should consume more iron, calcium and folic acid, aside from other essential vitamins, in order to ensure the good condition of the baby’s blood, bones, brain and spine respectively. it is also important to follow the food pyramid, which suggests the amounts of daily servings of these food groups:

oWhole grain products such as bread and rice: 6 to 11 servings
oVegetables, colorful as well as green and leafy ones: 3 to 5 servings
oFruits: 2 to 4 servings
oDairy products including milk, cheese and yogurt: 4 to 6 servings
oLean meat and other protein-rich products: 3 to 4 servings
oWater, fruit juice or other healthy beverage: 6 to 8 glasses
oFoods rich in fat and oil, and sweets: serve sparingly

Finally, to complete the recipe for a healthy pregnancy, along with diet, exercise should complement the pregnancy as well. of course, there are only certain forms of exercise that a pregnant woman can undergo, as anything else might be too strenuous, or might put the pregnant mother and the baby at risk for injury. Walking, stationary cycling, low-impact aerobics, yoga, Pilates, and swimming or other aquatic exercises are recommended exercises during pregnancy. Aside from promoting wellness in general, these exercises also strengthen the muscles, thereby preparing the mother’s body to deliver a child. Exercises that should not be participated in during pregnancy include hockey, boxing, wrestling, football, soccer, gymnastics, horseback riding, skating, skiing, racquet sports, weight lifting, as injuries due to these sports or even any strong force could impose harm upon the baby.

Pregnancy, diet and exercise – the proper understanding and awareness of the three would result to bringing to life a happy, healthy baby.

Charlotte gala to raise awareness of Alzheimer’s disease and research

Dr. Goldie Byrd has spent years researching the genetics of Alzheimer’s disease, particularly among African-Americans, who are twice as likely to develop the memory-impairing disease as whites.

Byrd’s research team at N.C. A&T State University – in collaboration with multiple medical centers across the country – took nine years to recruit more than 4,000 African-Americans with Alzheimer’s for long-term study.

It took so long partly because they needed to build trust. Many blacks remain skeptical of scientific research in the aftermath of the Tuskegee syphilis experiment that mistreated black subjects.

As Byrd and her fellow researchers recruited subjects, they also found a lot of misunderstanding and embarrassment about Alzheimer’s itself.

“when we go around, particularly in rural areas… we find that people are not nearly as willing to talk about Alzheimer’s as they are, say, about cancer, high blood pressure and heart disease.

“This disease carries with it a stigma,” said Byrd, a biology professor and dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at N.C. A&T.

“if you ask people, they would rather lose a limb than lose their mind, if you will.”

Byrd and her colleagues realized the need for better education and awareness. So as an outgrowth of their research, the team created “Keeping Memories Alive,” a project to bring better understanding about Alzheimer’s to patients, caregivers and policy makers – not just African-Americans.

They’re launching a 10-city national tour, and the first gala and educational forum will be in Charlotte Saturday at the Mint Museum Uptown.

It will feature a performance by Ruben Studdard, a past “American Idol” winner, who has written a song, “I know It’s you,” based on his experience with a relative with the disease.

One of the goals of “Keeping Memories Alive” is to teach caregivers how to take care of themselves as well as their loved ones.

“a person with Alzheimer’s can live for decades,” Byrd said. loved ones of Alzheimer’s patients “are some of the most overworked and overburdened caregivers of all.”

The message is also about prevention.

“We want people to be more health conscious,” Byrd said. “We don’t really know how to prevent (Alzheimer’s). But we do know that a healthier body in general means a healthier brain.”

Fighting Cancer – Strengthen Your Immune System Naturally, A Much Better Way

All cancers are simply a disease of an immune system that’s been weakened by the way we now live with our artificial food, our sedentary lifestyle as well as the toxic chemicals we use. Common sense should tell us that to overcome the problem all one has to do is to strengthen the immune system and the best way to achieve that is naturally.

The root cause of the cancer growths should be the focus of any treatments yet our mainstream way of treating it typically ignores this. Our treatments today attack the symptoms at the surface, not the causes at the roots. they think of any cancer cells as foreign invaders and simply try to annihilate them instead of treating them as normal body cells which have engaged in undisciplined rapid cell division because of an immune system that’s been weakened.

A much more effective way is to treat the body naturally which will strengthen the immune system and that will assist the body to heal itself.
