In the study, researchers used animal models to examine the relationship between gut bacteria and immune response of the body.

For the study, researchers used two sets of mice. One set of mice had a tweaked gene and lacked the ability to produce lymphotoxin- a toxin that helps the mice’s immune system regulate the bacteria in the guts while the other set of mice acted as a control. both sets of mice were fed on the same high-calorie diet.

Researchers found that both sets of mice gained during the initial weeks of the study, however, mice that lacked lymphotoxin stopped gaining weight after a couple of weeks whereas normal mice kept getting fatter.

In a second part of the experiment, researchers transferred some of the study mice’s droppings to a set of mice that were raised in a germ-free environment (these mice had no bacteria in their gut). Mice that received droppings on study group mice that had lymphotoxin gained weight but mice that were given droppings from lymphotoxin-lacking mice didn’t gain any weight.

When mice were housed together they ate some of the other mice’s droppings( because mice are coprophagic meaning that they eat excreta of other mice) and gained the ability to get bacteria that are responsible for weight gain.

“Our results suggest that it may be possible to learn how to regulate these microbes in ways that could help prevent diseases associated with obesity. we now think we could inhibit the negative side effects of obesity by regulating the microbiota and perhaps manipulating the immune response,” said Vaibhav Upadhyay, first author of the study.

According to the authors, there are more than 500 different types of strains of bacteria in the gut and “the precise microbes that promote such weight gain and the specific host responses that foster their growth need to be better established.”

The study was published in Nature Immunology.

So, am I proponent of this program? probably not. although it has been round for quite some time, and a lot of people do swear by it and its’ effects, there are a lot of other simpler, non restrictive and not to mention cheaper ways of losing weight like plain old watching what you eat and exercise. Incidentally, the Slim Fast program or plan does still advise that you do exercise.

One major drawback of the Slim Fast plan is availability of their product. It is not readily available worldwide. Even in the US, not all stores carry the line. I read a comment from a lady in nearby Mexico who could not find a store that sells it. some of my friends who live in Asia for example have trouble. And the price is double what you would pay for here. if you were shipped overseas on an extended tour for example, what do you do then? Anything more than a case or two of the stuff will be classified as commercial quantity and the duties will be out of this world. so is Slim Fast a diet or just a very clever marketing program? you decide.

Dr. Goldie Byrd has spent years researching the genetics of Alzheimer’s disease, particularly among African-Americans, who are twice as likely to develop the memory-impairing disease as whites.

Byrd’s research team at N.C. A&T State University – in collaboration with multiple medical centers across the country – took nine years to recruit more than 4,000 African-Americans with Alzheimer’s for long-term study.

It took so long partly because they needed to build trust. Many blacks remain skeptical of scientific research in the aftermath of the Tuskegee syphilis experiment that mistreated black subjects.

As Byrd and her fellow researchers recruited subjects, they also found a lot of misunderstanding and embarrassment about Alzheimer’s itself.

“when we go around, particularly in rural areas… we find that people are not nearly as willing to talk about Alzheimer’s as they are, say, about cancer, high blood pressure and heart disease.

“This disease carries with it a stigma,” said Byrd, a biology professor and dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at N.C. A&T.

“if you ask people, they would rather lose a limb than lose their mind, if you will.”

Byrd and her colleagues realized the need for better education and awareness. So as an outgrowth of their research, the team created “Keeping Memories Alive,” a project to bring better understanding about Alzheimer’s to patients, caregivers and policy makers – not just African-Americans.

They’re launching a 10-city national tour, and the first gala and educational forum will be in Charlotte Saturday at the Mint Museum Uptown.

It will feature a performance by Ruben Studdard, a past “American Idol” winner, who has written a song, “I know It’s you,” based on his experience with a relative with the disease.

One of the goals of “Keeping Memories Alive” is to teach caregivers how to take care of themselves as well as their loved ones.

“a person with Alzheimer’s can live for decades,” Byrd said. loved ones of Alzheimer’s patients “are some of the most overworked and overburdened caregivers of all.”

The message is also about prevention.

“We want people to be more health conscious,” Byrd said. “We don’t really know how to prevent (Alzheimer’s). But we do know that a healthier body in general means a healthier brain.”
